Staying Raw Vegan at the Boone County Fair or Any local Fair

Being a raw vegan means abstaining from cooked and processed foods, focusing instead on fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouted grains. Attending a fair like Boone County's can be tricky, but with some planning, you can enjoy the event while sticking to this amazing lifestyle.

Here are practical tips to help you stay raw vegan during your fair visit:

1. Pack Your Own Raw Snacks and Meals

Preparation is key. Before heading to the fair, pack a variety of raw, plant-based snacks that are portable and satisfying:

  • Fresh Fruit: Apples, oranges, grapes, berries, bananas, or any seasonal fruit.
  • Vegetable Sticks: Carrots, celery, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, and bell pepper strips.
  • Raw Nut and Seed Mixes: A handful of almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds.
  • Raw Energy Bites: Homemade raw balls with dates, nuts, and coconut.
  • Green Smoothies: Pre-made or freshly blended smoothies in a portable bottle.

Having these on hand ensures you have delicious, nourishing options and reduces temptation to indulge in cooked fair foods.

2. Research or Find Raw Vegan Vendors

While most fair vendors serve cooked or fried foods, some fairs are increasingly accommodating alternative eating modifications. Check the Boone County Fair's website or contact organizers beforehand to see if any vendors offer raw or vegan options.

Alternatively, look for local health food stores or raw food cafes near your local fair that might offer fresh, ready-to-eat raw meals or snacks. You can bring these with you or plan to visit them before or after the fair.

3. Visit Fresh Markets or Farmers' Stalls

Fairs often feature local farmers selling fresh produce or artisanal raw products. Take advantage of these stalls to pick up ripe fruit, raw salads, or organic produce. Supporting local farmers aligns with the fair's agricultural spirit and provides healthy, raw options.

4. Stay Hydrated with Raw Beverages

Fairs can be crowded and hot, so staying hydrated is essential. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day. You can also enjoy raw coconut water, fresh fruit-infused water, or cold-pressed vegetable juices-if available- without compromising your raw vegan principles.

5. Practice Mindful Indulgence

While staying strictly raw vegan is ideal, if you find yourself tempted by cooked fair foods, practice mindful vegan eating. Enjoy the experience without guilt, and get back to your raw diet as soon as possible. Remember, one indulgence doesn't derail your overall health goals (in most cases...Juice fasting however it does).

6. Engage in the Fair's Agricultural Roots

Connect with the fair's focus on farming and sustainability by learning about local organic farms or raw food communities in Illinois, or in your local area. Attending workshops or talks about plant-based living can enhance your experience and inspire you to achieve at this lifestyle.

7. Enjoy the Experience Beyond Food

Fairs are about community, fun, and celebration. Focus on the rides, games, live music, and social interactions. Use the opportunity to share your raw vegan lifestyle with friends and family, possibly inspiring them to explore healthier choices.
